Smith, Herschel, Sr., 86, passed peacefully Monday (6/15/2015) at the Woonsocket Health Center.  Born in Hartford City, Indiana, a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Jones) Smith, he came to Rhode Island after getting out of the Navy.  He was the husband of the late Sandra Danubia (Cuevas) Smith.  

Mr. Smith was a meat cutter at various butcher shops and supermarkets around the state for 50 years before retiring in 1993.  He was a member of the US Navy having served two hitches from 1945 through 1949.  He was a dedicated veteran as he served with the Military Honors Program helping to render honors to deceased veterans.  After his retirement he worked at the Benny’s distribution center for two years.

He leaves a son, Herschel Smith, Jr. of North Smithfield, and a daughter Carla C. Beattie of Cranston.  He was brother of the late Charles, Emmitt, Ernest, Harold and Everett Smith, Medra Irene Jones and Mildred Inez Coons.  He was also the loving companion of Theresa Morin.

At the request of the family, his inurnment will take place at RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, RI, with full Military Honors.
